Hi Everyone,
At one point my mom had a Kenmore model 158.1784080 in the cabinet ( but would always go back to her portable singer 15 RAF more frequently)

I have been able to identify 158.1780 series Kenmore's
Can anyone explain to me whats into reading those coded numbers after 158.178----?

As we were going through my mom and dads estate I was able to find an old Sears service agreement that lists the machine as a Kenmore  model number 158.1784080, with a date of purchase on 11-13-82

As a side note, after my moms passing my dad would eventually give the machine away to my brother and his wife, which they would eventually give it away to a school that had a sewing program...maybe home economics, etc.

Thanks for any insight on this!

According to this chart, it was made by Jaguar/Maruzen in Taiwan. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13fGnnr7oYXjzC1OQRsq2AaNGUUmtqNbC9BfyAOpxdFo/edit#gid=0

I have another chart (don't remember where I got it) that skips right over the 1780's for some reason? Kenmore's numbering system is bizarre and doesn't seem to have any relation to the years they were made, ie, they don't go in order chronologically although my 158.1774 did happen to be made in 1974 LOL

Thanks Sewcat!
So I guess theres no rhyme nor reason as to why the following numbers applied, I saw in one chart that quite a few models fell under the same type as far as internal components were concerned. I guess the other numbers might have meant something to Sears such as a wood grain panel or some other external cosmetic feature on the sewing machines, etc.
Thanks for the chart it was very helpful!
 All the best!

sewcat, the pdf that you attached for the most part only goes up to 1980, with an entry for 1985.  The entry for 1985 year of manufacture has a question mark after it, as also seen in the spreadsheet for 158.12112.  I see in the spreadsheet that there are some later models, but evidently those have been added by members of the group?

Janey I have no idea who has access to add to that spreadsheet. I wasn't paying close attention to how far they went because I've only gotten a couple of the older ones to check on there. And I sadly do not recall where I found that pdf

That pdf can now be found at http://www.searsarchives.com/history/files/sewing_id.pdf  I've probably had it for 13 years.  If you look at the properties, it was created in 2007.

I think it is the same as can be found at https://www.doubleveil.net/zssmp/resources.htm#sears
But it has the 1211 as  1977 and 1979, then it has a 12114 out of sequence with "1985?" also.
