I'm thinking about buying a W&G lock stitch machine, but from what I can tell it takes an odd needle size known by the following numbers:  75W, 581, LA x 1617, SY8780.   I have spent a good hour searching the internet and I cannot find anyone who sells that needle using any of the numbers listed.

Supposedly Organ makes the needle using the 581 designation, but again no luck in finding it in their catalog or at any retail outlets.

Does anyone know of a source?  If I can't find the needles I'll probably pass on the machine.  It seems to be calling my name even though I've sworn off buying any machines.  (Seems to be a common ailment on this board.)

Thanks for the help.

H.

Not much is available.  Sizes 14 /90 and 16/100 or #3 & #4 are sold on ebay.  Search 581 needle.  Perhaps they can be special ordered from Organ or Schmetz but I wouldn't count on it.  These needles are similar to the Automatic chain stitch needles with the groove running the length of the shank except longer.

I have to ask... would the needles for this model of W&G be different than say the Boye "20-1/2" needles?

A 581 needle can be made into Boye 20-1/2 by grinding off some length
