Hi  Having trouble adjusting the thread tension on this singer 201. Just wondering if I should take the upper thread tension apart?  No experience here...The tension is so tight  its hard to pull the thread thru.  I did loosen the lower tension so it is more normal...as it was extremely tight also.  I can get them to make a decent stitch when both are tight, but then the tension on the thread is ridiculous...I can't work with this.  Anyone have suggestions?  Hope this makes sense.
Thanks Rita

I would think that taking it apart and cleaning it would help a great deal.  ArchaicArchane, member here, has a few videos specifically about tensions. (All her videos are very good.)  Here is one that shows disassembly and getting it back together  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzFXRdNE_1s

Another good resource for maintaining sewing machines can currently be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20161016072826/http://www.tfsr.org/publications/technical_information/sewing_machine_manual/  I would suggest downloading them all for future reference.  Especially in light of this thread http://www.victoriansweatshop.com/post/tfsr-org-sewing-machine-manual-gone-8283817?pid=1294234356
