Before we were all shut in quarantine, I found a Singer Professional Buttonholer complete for a pittance. The only hiccup is that the feeddog cover is meant for the Singer Golden Panorama and doesn't, of course, fit my 401G.
So, first question: have you ever tried doing without the feeddog cover and just raise the throat plate? I've read that it works but I'd rather have your opinion...
Second question: what stitch combination do you use? I've looked at the 401G manual but I couldn't find any clear answer... 
And last, the buttonholer came without an instruction manual and I couldn't seem to find one that applies to the use with a 401...

I've used my Professional Buttonholer on my 401 by raising the throat plate.  Whenever I use the Singer buttonhole attachments, I either lower the feed dogs or raise the plate since I don't like to mess with attaching the feed dog covers - I'm just too lazy!
