I have just bought my 29K58, and I haven't even picked it up yet, but I have spent some hours in front of the PC screen, reading up on 29 stuff. Regarding the problems with the 29-4 you describe here, there was an illustrated solution in https://leatherworker.net/forum/ , I failed to note a more exact adddress. Search for 29 or 29-4, and you'll find a lot of good info there.

I don't know if you are familiar with this site: I just found Dan Hopgood's interesting blog, where he describes the work and modifications needed to upgrade a Singer 29-4, using parts for the later 29-71 machines. He also have an overview of the differences between the 29 models. And, a lot of other interesting stuff!

Thanks Olaf.  I'm definitely going to give that a thorough read.  I think I got lucky with mine; I didn't have nearly the issues he did.  I have thought about replacing the needle bar driving lever with a modern one.   There's a lot of vertical slop in the piston which could affect timing.  It doesn't yet, so I'm in no rush.
