I went out to look at a machine today and wound up rescuing 3 older singers, 2 of which were full of dirt dauber nests.  I removed all of the loose nests and started cleaning the wood with a sponge and warm soapy water.  That works, but is very slow to get all of the residue off.  The machines both have nest marks on the metal and inside the body of the machine as well, but amazingly the decals still look fairly good.

Looking for any advice on how to clean out the machines as any of the fine dirt that gets left behind would act like an abrasive.  I know I am going to have to disassemble them farther than I usually do.  Are there any gotchas to watch out for on that?  Is it possible to ultrasonic clean them?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ultrasonic cleaning would work.  Patience and sewing machine oil will as well

Just don't put anything with decals on it in the cleaner - it will take them off too.

That's what I was wondering. Both of the dirt dauber machines have decent decals, so I guess I will stick to soaking with a wet soapy sponge followed by copious amounts of oil. More worried about the inside than the outside.

Got the 1910 15k cleaned up and sewing this morning. Still needs more cleaning but a nice lite coat of sm oil will keep it happy until I get back to it.

Good Point!  Sorry that I did not catch that!  Thank you!
