I've seen similar poses in other ads from that period. Maybe the point was that the woman is examining the fine work she has already sewn?

I agree - I think the point of the photo was to show the sewing outcome from the machines - not necessarily the woman hard at work actually using the machine.  This sets the stage for thinking the machine is a great aid in sewing- illustrating work that is mostly complete.

Interesting that the two photos I just got on glass plate negatives was the same.  One picture at the helm, one on the other side with lots fabric.
