As you may know Australia has suffered badly from climate change and we've been having terrible bushfires since Winter (August). As a consequence of this there are a lot of young koalas, bats, wombats and Joeys (baby kangaroos) who have lost their mothers to the fires.
So I've been making 'Joey Pouches' for the local animal rescue squad. These are a substitute for their mothers' pouches, and I made two liners for each because they urinate in them (as they do in their mothers' pouches).

Very nice 😉  Wish I could get a good source here in the Philippines of cane toad leather.  They are not native and I know the destruction they're doing in Australia.  I guess some of the crocs have no learned to eat only the rear legs and not die from poison so nature does adapt.  I'd love to use that stuff in projects.  Good luck on your work.  Best regards, Mike

They live in them. I think they pouches just get hung on something.
They normally live in their mothers' pouches but their mothers have been killed in the fires. This week's supposed to set a new record for heat. There seems to be no end to this [frown]

I can't believe the heat reports, praying for all of you.
It makes sense that they can just hang the pouches, I was thinking the Joey's would need the movement also.

We're driving through it today and I'm a bit concerned. The heat records have been broken twice this week and the fires are still out of control.

I just had to scroll to the top to remind myself how long this has been going on.  Started in August!  Yikes, that's a lot of heat, fire, and destruction.  Praying you get a break from this soon.

Thanks everyone.
I returned from Melbourne via Nowra on Thursday and Friday. I went this way because one of my sewing friends (Cyndy Kitt) lives there - her plan for Saturday's fire was to burn in her house. Thankfully she was spared.
You can help with sewing things (search for animal rescue squad in FB groups and join) or donate money for the people whose homes, businesses and farms have been destroyed. The Red Cross is organising donations. Either way it'll cost money because there's no free postage.
It's estimated that over a billion animals have died now. I've donated money and have made (and am planning to make more) pouches.
Thanks again
Mike

This topic is getting a lot of attention on FB right now and I'm helping to spread it more. I think I've shared 6 or 7 different posts about the rescue squad in the last two days. I'm going to get started tomorrow making pouches and later tonight I'm going to put out the call for more people to help on my main FB group.

Thank you so much Cari.
The FB group is https://www.facebook.com/groups/arfsncrafts/ and you'll be welcomed: they have several overseas members sewing madly.
I'll be heading to the sewing room shortly to make some more Joey pouches. There are loads of pictures in the group of how they get used. Some of the photos are heartbreaking.
I feel bad for the people made homeless, but I live too far away to offer my home. If Cyndy had revealed her 'plan' when I was there I'd have considered kidnapping her for a week or two [biggrin]

Anyone sewing for the burned animals, a lady in California has a private plane to take stuff to Australia! You can minimise any postage cost by shipping to her.
Some people are just amazing!
