It is said that of the exactly 500 1911 pistols made by Singer, only about 2,000 of them remain today.

Rock Island Auction is a reputable auction house - BUT - I would want an expert examination, including metallurgy, before I'd plop $85K on one.

With all that said, it looks good!

When I saw this price, I laughed and laughed. Sent it my husband as a "let's laugh together" kind of post. Yeah, not. He was shocked that it sold that low. The serial number shows that it is the first one ever made. This is one of the two most rare 1911's. The other one is Union Switch and Signal.

He has seen these guns sell for over (brace yourself) $100,000. So, Singer fans, keep your eyes open! I just learned a bunch!

I was a bit surprised a the "bargain" price too. Maybe the buyer got lucky with it, or maybe it's one of the "other 1,500".

If I recall correctly, a Singer 1911A1 holds the record for the highest price ever paid for a handgun at auction for $414,000
